Nearly officially Spring, and yet I don't feel ready. My inner clock says its time but the persistent snow outdoors says its not.

Yet, the March Pullman Farmers Market is nearly here: This Saturday, March 16th from 10am to 2pm in the WSU Brelsford Visitor Center.

We don't have produce yet. We'll work on that for future winter seasons.

We DO have information and signups for our CSA and Market Bucks programs.

Here are the brochures for those:

CSA Market Bucks

We are still working on our planting plan, developing seed ordering lists, finding monies (Thank you CSA Members!) for purchasing things like seeds, chicks and chick feed, the last of the hay needed for our sheep flock, diesel for the tractor, etc.

At the moment, Jason and I are both driving taxi for College Cabs so our personal monetary needs are covered and we are working on saving some funds, both from taxi driving and by being judicious with CSA funds, to allow ourselves some full time work before the Market Season actually starts bringing us our farming season income.

We also are working into our farming season some family time. We will be taking several weekends and other time off from farming and farmers markets to spend some time with our own and extended family. We'll play on lake Roosevelt and travel with our Scout troop on adventures into the great outdoors. We'll even take some time as just us and "enjoy" the summer break from school.

I know, what a concept... farmers taking a vacation???

Well, we've decided that we are humans as well. As much as we love what we do, we need time to do other things. Enjoy the outdoors for what it is, not just what it can grow for us. Spend time with our children as they grow. Support our children in their activities and adventures.

You'll notice that we have made several changes to our CSA program in support of that goal. Mainly, we will be putting several weeks worth of the CSA value onto a CSA Card that can be used as the CSA Member sees fit at our booths. We also are offering the Market Bucks program which is designed to give the member the full financial benefit of purchasing a CSA without the limitation on their flexibility.

Wow what a whirlwind of the last few years!

I have been getting many questions of late and suddenly realized that my last blog post was the first (and last!) newsletter of 2016.

I apparently have a lot of work to do...

RE: CSA

YES! We are continuing our CSA in 2018

YES! we do still have open spaces.

We have NOT yet finalized the pricing or exactly how many spaces we will have available.

INFO in the form of a freshly updated brochure will be directly emailed to 2017's CSA members as well as anybody else who has emailed me regarding CSA signup as soon as possible. said brocures will be ready no later than the 3rd weekend in February for the Pullman Winter Farmers Market.

We will be happy to take signups at the Pullman Winter Farmer's Market on February 17th between 2 and 6pm at Mantis Martial Arts in Downtown Pullman.

Please keep your eyes out for more information coming soon.

Other News:

Kids and Lambs have arrived! We are currently waiting for our last Mama to drop her lamb and then it'll be off to figuring out where to graze them first. With such a mild winter, as long as the ground is pretty solid, there is no reason why we can't move them out to pasture very soon.. They'l be able to eat the last of the grasses that grew last year and be in the field the moment grasses start their explosion of new growth this spring.

Pullman Farmers Market:

Every Third Saturday the Pullman Farmer's Market happens right in Down Town Pullman! 2-6pm at Mantis Martial Arts on Main Street. Next date is February 17th! We'll have pork and a few types of fresh vegetables that the wild critters left alone long enough for us to harvest them. Also Peggy from Pioneer produce will be there with her amazing jams and any fresh produce that her wild critters missed. Alyssa and Richard Link will be taking orders for their superb chickens at Link'd Hearts Ranch, Wilson Banner Ranch will have cider and other goodies.

If you happen to be reading this as a producer within 60 miles of Pullman and would like to take an opportunity in February to take some sign-ups or sell some surprise available crops, please don't hesitate: email PullmanFarmersMarket@gmail.com ASAP and get yourself a spot! We are always looking for new vendors!

For now, that is all. We have many things we would like to accomplish this year and we truly hope that you'll ride along with us on this crazy adventure!

All our love,
Margaret and Jason

It’s that time of year again! The markets have started, Vegetables are rolling through our booths, a fresh batch of pigs just went in for slaughter so fresh cuts will be back at markets by Saturday Market and we are already calling down our lists to make sure vegetable products get moved and not fed to chickens as waste. And the bugs have already taken out a couple of beds so that the chickens and sheep both got vegetable treats.

We have been starting scads of trays of various different kinds of winter squash (including 20 trays with 72 cells each of just Delicata squash!) and clearing out early beds of crops that were either done or eaten by bugs or bolted to seed because of the early heat so that we can start planting tomato starts in our large hoophouse. We also spent part of one afternoon laying about 3,500 feet of mulch paper for said winter squash. We were able to borrow a mulch layer for our tractor from the WSU Organic Farm to accomplish all of that footage in just about 4 hours, including frequent and frustrating fine-tuning. It was worth it! Laying mulch by hand takes a lot longer by hand and is hard on your back because you must shovel dirt all along the edge to hold the paper down or the wind will blow it away.

All together, not counting children who were busy climbing trees and hay bales, we had 9 people working on cutting, planting and tractor implement adjusting and tractor driving. In just 5 hours we were able to get all but 275 pounds of the 1000 pounds we purchased cut and into the ground. Jason and I and our Intern put in and finished the last 25 lbs that had been cut but not planted on Monday morning.

Jason and I both had the feeling of being “real” farmers with this project in particular. We both felt like up until now, we never used the tractor much in the actual cultivation of our vegetables. Sure, we’d use the rototiller to make a fine seedbed or hook up to our discs to take down a cover crop or to break up a space that chickens or pigs had occupied over the winter so that manure had plenty of time to breakdown before any crops were even planted but we’d never used it to actually plant a vegetable crop. We borrowed a toolbar and some ditchers from Wilson Banner Ranch and finally got out the box of tractor sized ratchets so that we could adjust it all and then cutting ditches and covering up potatoes took almost no time at all! (check out Facebook for the Video!)

Allow me to caveat all of that with the fact that there are millions of farmers in the world who are quite successful at farming and don’t have or want a tractor. They are most certainly REAL farmers! (There are a couple at the Moscow Farmer’s Market!) I am saying “Real” in quotes to emphasize the stereotypical idea that “real” farmers are only “real” when they use the tractor, or similar, for every aspect of their farm from planting to cultivating to harvest.

Coming up this week is tons more transplanting! The list off the top of my brain includes tomatoes, peppers, onions, more kale, more chard, more bok choi, broccoli, cauliflower and many many more items. And the last of our potatoes. That will make nearly an acre of potatoes for this season! Definitely a new venture for us on this scale but it’s one that we don’t feel is adequately served in our area and we have the space such that we can put in an acre of potatoes without cramping our style on our CSA or having a full variety of vegetables at our Market booths.

The other big change to look for this season is definitely going to be lots of vegetables at the markets. We have purchased two full booth spaces at both the Pullman Farmer’s Market as well as the Moscow Farmer’s Market and plan on filling all of that space with vegetables! Even if you didn’t purchase a CSA you’ll be able to pick up plenty of veggies from us also each week to go with eggs, lamb and pork. Financially for us, the vegetables are going to be much more important this season as we have been having some challenges finding land on which we are allowed to run batches of hogs. We are working on some options for our second and final batch of the 2016 season but are open to many ideas for land for the coming years if it’s not too far away from our current farm.

As many of you may have heard, we had to move house this spring. The farm has not moved and doesn’t need to in the near future. We purchased a small mobile home in Pullman and have finally finished moving out of the farmhouse. Which means we can finally focus on getting caught up on farming! Our new house still feels like a storage unit with tons of boxes everywhere but each night we get another one or two unpacked and every night we are able to actually live in a little bit more of our space. Our longer-term plan is to live in our new place for four or five years while we save up some money and search for our Forever Farm. Ideally, somewhere in Whitman County, preferably in the Pullman School District but we will see what stands out to us as we get closer to being ready to actually purchase a place.

The other big news, if you haven’t already heard is that I, Margaret, am back on the farm full-time. This is a long-time dream of ours finally coming to fruition. In April, I resigned my job at WSU and made the leap. So far, I am enjoying farming full time. While everything is still extremely stressful, more so because the farm will actually need to provide our family’s income for the year, my life’s stress is reduced on the whole because I am not ALSO beholden to my employer at WSU and their expectations. I am so much more enjoying each day, even though it is so much harder and physical work. I get to see Oak all day long and I also get to see HannaMae and Alli right after school. I get to see Jason all day long also. I know, some of you are raising your eyebrows at me and wondering how long it’ll take for us to do away with one another but so far we haven’t killed each other yet, quite…

This season, it will be tough and everything is in transition from what it was last season into the present in so many different ways and many things won’t and haven’t gone quite the way we’d wanted them to so far. On the other hand, things look bright. We are pretty well on track so far to at least squeak by, even if we end up needing to pick up some sort of job over the winter, we’ll do just fine.

Best wishes to you all on this bright week,

Transplanting party!

Sunday June 21st!

We are having a Transplanting work party BBQ on Sunday, June 21st and would love it if you and your family could make it!

We'll be working hard all morning to bust through hundreds of transplants as a crew and then enjoy some delicious Omache Farm Pork and potluck dishes.

Jake Cho of WSU Dining has volunteered to prepare some of our leg roasts for lunch. We'll be harvesting some fresh greens for a super-fresh salad to go along with a few other dishes. Bring along something to share and be ready to meet some new and old friends as we all pitch in to get things growing!

What to bring:

A hat, sunscreen and a water bottle are all that are required. There will be plenty of water to refill your bottle as needed.

We recommend that you wear closed toe shoes and pants that cover your knees as transplanting does involve moving along the ground.

If crawling along a row is a bit much for you, we always have some folks sitting around pulling plugs for those that are transplanting also.

Families with children are welcome as well! There are plenty of jobs available for children if they would like to help or they are welcome to just hang out or play.Omache Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14679754064872725707noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6876070407401733301.post-24362961765499662482015-06-10T17:14:00.000-07:002015-06-10T17:14:26.047-07:00Updates Updates UpdatesTweet
Tons of updates all around!

Our newsletter page here has all of our newsletters in PDF format available whenever you wish to view them.

We have some new videos available on our You Tube channel as well: one watching just how quickly our shearer, Martin Dibble, can shear a ewe. One watching him shear our largest ram-takes a wee bit longer, especially since I think the ram outweighs Martin by a good bit. The last one is much longer: Martin helped Ryan, our Intern (who you will have a change to meet more in depth at a later date) shear a yearling ewe. It takes about 15 minutes or so but it's quite educational and very cool to watch. Ryan did a fantastic job!

There are also plenty of photos from shearing available on our flicker photo page which should have it's own tab up above here as well. Take a look and see what fun you missed!

See you at the markets!

If you made it by last week's Winter Market. In the afternoon, you will likely have seen them if not had a chance to purchase some to try. To those folks who did pick one or both products up, we cannot wait to hear your feedback and love that you were all willing to be our guinea pigs!

The first new item is a new type of bulk sausage: Hot Sausage
It comes priced and packaged the same way our other bulk sausages do but the flavor packs just a bit of a kick.

The other new item is Ham Steaks. Boneless and pre-sliced to about 1/4" thick, these are fantastic when heated through on a hot skillet as straight up ham steaks with breakfast or added to a ham sandwich for breakfast or lunch.

We can't wait to hear of all the other ways you have tried cooking up our NEW Hot Sausage and Ham Steaks!

As I hope you all know by now, Jason and I are expecting baby #3 this August. the 17th to be as exact as babies will be. It's a little boy this time and yes, his big sisters are extremely excited!

Yes, I have been out working hard all season and you can all relax now as I have been banned from lifting heavy things in the last few months and having been blessed with multiple employees and interns, have been able to keep myself doing the easiest of jobs.

I try not to do too much sheep chasing anymore. much.

And yes, you will all have the opportunity to see, meet and/or hold the little one very soon after he arrives! Depending on when exactly he decides to make his grand entrance to the world and assuming that everything goes well of course, he'll be coming with us to the first market that I feel up to attending.

Specifically for our CSA members and definitely for all of our regular customers, there will be some things affected, depending again on when exactly munchkin decides the time is to his liking.

CSA shares will take a break for a week or we may do some sort of alternative. Keep your eyes on your email as we'll likely be notifying you by that method as to what exactly our alternative plan of choice will be.

For our regular customers, We'll try to have our booth at all of the markets no matter what but if for some reason Omache Farm doesn't arrive to market, at least you can make a pretty good guess at what's going on!

So at just about 2 1/2 weeks to go to the due date of Aug 17th, we are excited and busy preparing, hot and of course very tired. Keep your eye out at the markets for news and on Facebook. All of you lovely people are at the very top of our list to hear about our new little bundle of joy's arrival!Omache Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14679754064872725707noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6876070407401733301.post-25821991196362557522014-07-30T16:44:00.000-07:002014-07-30T16:44:31.619-07:00July 23 Hail StormTweet

So the newsletters simply haven't worked out as well this year as I was hoping they would. I'm sure all of you lovely folks will understand, given the circumstances.

That all being the case, this seems the perfect time to put several updates down on paper. Well, digital paper anyhow.

The biggest update is about the recent hail storm that passed through the area on Wednesday July 23. Hopefully most of you have had a chance to talk with Jason about it. He was getting our booth set up for the Wednesday market when it hit town and as our farm manager coordinated much of the acrobatics that ensued. There were several amazing folks that, upon hearing about yet another grand sheep escape that resulted from the hail storm, raced out to our farm to help put everyone back where they belonged.

The most challenging loss resulting from this storm is likely our pumpkins and winter squash. Being blessed with more acreage than many folks who grow veggies in the area, we were working on growing nearly an acre of pumpkins and another half acre of various winter squash varieties. The plants were very well established and while they have been growing back amazingly well the biggest question now is if they'll produce fully ripe fruits before the first frost. In just the last four seasons, we've seen first frosts come as early as mid September or as late as the end of October. Cross your fingers for luck for us!

All of our CSA members came down to the market to pick up their CSA shares that day (impressive given the nasty weather) and upon hearing of the total devastation of our outdoor crops completely understood when we told them that it meant a pretty sparse CSA share for the next month or more until we could get fresh crops planted and for the survivors (kale, chard, Zucchini) to grow back and start producing once again.

A huge thank you also goes out to Deep Roots Farm and Affinity Farm, both in Moscow. They have both donated a couple of different items to help us fill out our CSA shares this week. We cannot thank them enough!

Keep an eye on Facebook for photo updates. Jason is hoping to take some photos of the recovery every week (Wednesdays or so usually) so we can all be absolutely amazed at the progress and amazing resiliency of Mother Nature. Believe me when I say I have been most impressed at how well things have been growing back.Omache Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14679754064872725707noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6876070407401733301.post-3479266520599557982014-06-13T17:11:00.000-07:002014-06-13T17:11:47.481-07:00New Photos!Tweet

Spinach is one of those lovely vegetables that is inexpensive, ubiquitous, really really good for you, and extremely versatile! Shall we break it down just a bit and give that huge-looking half-pound bag you just bought some ideas that make it suddenly not very much after all?

What to look for:

The darker, the better. Especially within a bag or box or other group of spinach. Those are going to be the youngest, most nutritious leaves. If you are finding lots of yellow-green leaves, chances are the leaves were some of the older ones on the plant or that bag of spinach may have been on the shelf for a while. Frankly, it won't taste very good.

Crispy and crunchy. The way to test? No, don't squish or pouf or otherwise abuse the bag of spinach. After that the only thing I can say is that it WAS crisp.
challenge to having no barn is that now, we had no partially set up facilities
for collecting, holding and feeding sheep into the pen with Martin to be shorn:
We had to build something. Luckily, we
already have a stash of cattle panels and t-posts around for building various
catch pens and loading chutes for sheep and pigs. It took us a little while to decide on a good
place that was flat, close to the house for electricity and big enough to hold
everyone but once we did building something proved relatively easy.

The fun
part came when it was time in the morning to collect everyone in the
chute. While the majority of the sheep
have been collected and shorn before, this particular setup was new (which
equals extra skittishness) and there is always at least one extra skitter
individual anyhow. Add in younger lambs
who scatter when herded like an ant nest when you stab it with a large stick as
well as the alpacas who simply despise shearing day and never go the way you
want anyhow and you have a recipe for sheep anywhere but where you need them to
be. Mix in one panel that wasn’t tied
quite tightly enough and you get escaped unshorn sheep too.

Stir it all
together and you get lots of frustration, lots of laughs, luckily a good
natured shearer, a great deal of learning and about 60 new fleeces that need
new homes soon!
